About Federal Takings

Widlund Law represents clients in cases where actions of the United States government, including federal departments and agencies, result in a compensable taking.  These cases are addressed in the United States Court of Federal Claims.  Mr. Widlund was admitted to the Federal Claims bar in 2006.  An example of these cases is the federal “rails to trails” scheme where railroad easements are converted to public recreational trails upon abandonment of the railroad use.  Where that easement ground would have reverted to the underlying landowner upon railroad abandonment without the trail conversion, compensation is due to that landowner.
